Current research projects

My current research projects focus on the intersections of digital platforms, market design and algorithmic decision-making. Since the Junior Research Group has only recently been set up, my research projects in this area are an almost 1:1 match with the projects of the group:

Past research projects

Expectations, uncertainty & financial markets

Processing information, forming expectations and acting accordingly is an important driver of economic activity and especially financial markets. My research in this area did focus particularly on the origins and the effects of uncertainty.

Methods

Innovations in machine learning create opportunities to enhance the economic and econometric toolset. These innovations are not only technical, but also conceptual, particularly for statistical and causal inference.

  • Treatment effect estimation under predictive power considerations, in preparation for submission.
  • Testing and visualizing conditional covariate balance, in preparation for submission.
  • Statistical significance as outlier detection, work in progress.

Policy work and outreach activities

At ZEW, we spend a significant fraction of our time on policy work and outreach activities. Ideally, all our projects have both implications for research and policy-making. Two examples of my policy work and outreach activities:
